Feather Peak east

Drew Lyness, Saturday 12th January, 2019 5:51PM

Short tour up towards Feather Peak from the east. Pulled the pin around 1550m due to decreasing visibility & increasingly reactive wind slab. Broken clouds & frequent sucker holes all morning. Warm temps, -4 at 900m, not much colder at the top of our run ~1550m. Widespread windslab just as advertised in the Hot Zone report, E through NE aspects. Wind slab highly variable in spatial distribution & thickness - ranging from 1f to 4f thickness. At 1500m the upper pack consisted of widespread windslab, around 20cm thick, reactive to skier weight and overlaying a sugary facet layer with poor cohesion. Notable collapses & woomfh-ing from 1300 up on flat, wind scoured terrain & areas of shallow depth. New snow surface below 1200m in protected areas was beginning to respond to the warm temperatures by 2pm, with some potential for slabbing. Some reasonable turns in wind sheltered areas & soft slab. No wind.

Weather Report

-4 at the car , barely dipped below -5 all day. Travel up to 1500m. Felt humid. New snow surface at lower elevations was beginning to become cohesive with warm temps.
