NRC Slopes

Beyond Our Peak, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Stormy day on the NRC Slopes (MacD West Shoulder). Things felt generally stable below treeline. No signs of avalanche instability (wind slabs/storm slabs) was noticed. Winds were calm to light. At around 1900m, winds picked up to moderate from the S with strong gusts. Significant wind transport was observed at ridgetop. 10-15cm deep soft wind/storm slabs were noticed on the shoulder, proven by shooting cracks propagating 10m in front of us. A party of two, sadly skiing right above, triggered a SZ1 slab, 10cm deep x 20m wide that ran for 40 meters, after sending some more sluff our way. This is a reminder to consider what's below you when dropping from right above a busy uptrack. All in all, the surface snow was showing considerably more slab properties as we climbed in elevation and as the winds intensified.
