Quick Observation

Did a couple laps on West Nile today. Warm and mostly sunny, about -5, about 11:45 on our up track we heard and witnessed a cornice fall from Bow ridge line. Lots of noise and the cloud reached tree line. We skied over to have a look, no snow made it over the upper bench and did not appear it created much if any run out. We didn’t head on to the bench with other large cornices looming and appeared to be no involvement. Removed a large chunk of snow from the steep unsupported terrain below the fall. See red outline and X marking the approximate spot left of the square notch. Very little wind down below, some spindrift off the ridge and mostly sunny. Great reminder of the potential for overhead hazard even in moderate conditions. Lots of ski tracks on the upper bench this weekend. The crown line from the impact was clearly visible from the open area near the hostel, but couldn’t guess how thick it was? Estimate maybe 60 - 80m wide.
