Quick Observation

Skied between 1850m-1250m. Probed 150-180cm at 1800m. Quick test profile showing most recent crust down 40cm with suspected surface hoar lying above. CTM sudden planar results in upper storm snow down 40cm failing right on the crust. Lack of slab properties felt in areas skied today, we definitely didn’t go hunting for avalanche terrain, we heard reports of a large slab release, rider triggered from Jan 10th so we stayed away from any big steep open TL features. We were getting small pocket slabs to release on unsupported pillows which was enough information and confirmed the test pit results. I suspect this new storm snow will be quite reactive in the coming days on this same layer. Unsure of the situation in the higher alpine and how prevalent this layer is up there. Also the big question mark is if the deeper PWLs with start becoming reactive with the new load.
