Quick Observation

Good skiing at treeline. We stayed out of the alpine as widespread wind scouring and crossloading was visible from below. Snow quality was generally good, with some evidence of windslab in loaded areas, and scouring on fetch aspects. Most notable was the inversion (detail in weather section). Surface Hoar is building below treeline near open water.

Weather

Valley Fog. Strong inversion. Temperatures, though in the -20s at valley bottom, rose rapidly with elevation gain, peaking at -4.

Snowpack

The top layer of new surface snow sits atop a crust that was quite thick and supportive in areas. The new snow appears to not be bonding well to the crust below. Under this crust is generally low density snow (4F/Fist) sitting atop a much firmer, thicker crust (which is 40cm on average below the surface.) As the day morning went on (and we gained elevation) pinwheeling from snow falling from trees was widespread, though with no entrainment. Surface snow was also becoming moist (easy to form snowballs). As we descended into the valley the snowpack showed more evidence of old melt/freeze, and surface hoar.
