Traveled approximately 4 miles up McCallum Creek into a drainage south of the creek. On south and west facing aspects we observed 3-4" cover of soft snow atop a very dense 2" ice crust that provided an extremely slippery surface for the overlaying fresh snow. Beneath the crust was approximately 180cm of fist to four finger hardness pack. We decided to turn back at 4500-ft as the fresh snow was condensing in the sun and avalanches seemed extremely likely atop the hard slab. No formal pit was dug. Skiing down to McCallum Creek proved difficult as ski edges struggled to hold on the ice slab.
