Toured around the June Lake backcountry for a second day on Wednesday. Compared to Tuesday, the hourglass bowl was even more wind affected. The snow in the bowl varied between wind scoured, punchy wind slabs, or soft struggi. The wind slabs were largely unreactive; however, when I jumped on a small rollover on a northern aspect it did crack beneath me. Sugary grains were below the isolated slab. We skied a south east aspect below San Joaquin mountain. Ridge top winds were moderate to gusty. Very little snow softening at 11,200ft. The north winds in the days prior had formed small cornices and the first 200ft below ridge line was either unreactive punchy wind slabs or firm and icy old snow. The best snow in the gullies was on sheltered north to east slopes.
