No shooting cracks. No whumping. No Na observed. Sled triggered remote on N slope at 11am (start zone approx 1450m). Size 2. 100m wide and ran 50-75m long. Wind slab problem. Crown depth =50cm in thinner spot to estimate =100cm in deepest. Crowned below ridge line pulling out at thin rocky points at top of a wide open slope. Estimate 40deg slope at top. Many old sled track visible on bed surface. We were on approx 25 degree slope below and off to side, clear of runout when it was triggered. Powder riding, sled / Ski pen was 10cm and boot pen was 30cm in Big Y valley at 1230m. Slight crust down 10cm and another thick 5cm MF crust found down at 30cm.
0 C at road (890m) at 10am, 1 C at 1pm. Wind S 30 km gust to 45 at road in am. -2C in alpine at noon. Lighter wind in E-W facing valleys. Mostly cloudy with squalls, low cloud in some valleys on the west side of White Pass. We went to Big Y for better vis, protected from wind. New snow on Summit lakes in valley bottom =10-15cm, settled dry (styrofoam feel). Significant wind drifts. Open water in creeks along WPYR barely visible for new snow in depressions.
Quick test on a small N facing lee slope at lower elevation at 1030m: HS probe 200cm, Boot pen 45cm. CTE down 40 and 45cm fist wind drifted powder. Clean failure in poorly bonded knife crust 2cm thick.
