Quick report
A group of us hiked out of Pole Creek on Fri to celebrate the force of nature that was Stratton Matteson. He spent more time in this zone than most of us will our entire lives, so felt like a good place to go and reflect on his legacy. Ryan, I and many others appreciate your tribute to him in today’s avy forecast! Speaking of which… we saw you out there yesterday, we were wondering who that solo guy was! 🤣 Small world. I was going to post many of the same pics that you did in the forecast. Conditions-wise, let’s see. You can drive to the TH. For going out towards Hayden between Middle and North, it’s about 3 miles of hiking (some dry, some on thin snow) before continuous skinning. With this low snow year it’s looking more like late spring down low. Up high is thin too, but at least is getting a little more filled in after the last storm. As mentioned in the forecast there was a crust most of the way. Much of this softened up in the afternoon, but not all of it, which made for interesting turns when you’re hauling through some great sorta-corn and then suddenly hit one of the spots that didn’t soften up. The large crown most of the way across the Diller face we were guesstimating at 2-4’, it was pretty sizeable. We ended up going to Prouty Point, which like most of the descent, had some good snow in it, and some surprise still-frozen sections. The south face of North Sister was looking pretty good, in hindsight that might have been a better choice. A long walk for maybe not the most epic turns, but it was great weather, and great way to connect with friends old and new to celebrate Strat’s life, and Strat woulda been stoked on bringing together folks in these beautiful mountains! ❤️
