Overcast skies most of the day, light misty rain in the valley below 1,500', snow flurries above 1,500', no wind but flagging and snow transport observed at higher elevations
Snowpack
No new or old avalanche activity was observed. Snow coverage was low. There were many ice overflows and sections of bare ground on the route. The creek had large sections of open water. There was a dusting of new snow during our field day, but the light load on the snowpack will likely not change the stability. The temperatures were above freezing for most of the day, helping to round in the snowpack and further shrink the limited snow coverage. If the temperatures continue to warm more rapidly, we may see some small wet loose activity on steep southerly slopes at mid-elevations. No formal snow pits were dug due to a lack of coverage and lack of change. We did see flagging and snow transport at higher elevations, so there is a possibility of a fresh shallow windslab at higher elevations, but given the low snow totals, the likelihood of triggering an avalanche in the Chugach State Park remains low.
