Tenderfoot

We toured up to the Tenderfoot area from the campground. As we gained elevation there was significant evidence of wind in the alpine on both sides of the valley. After passing the rain crust around 2500' we quickly entered into a wind buffed breakable crust. There was very few  pockets of soft snow left. We dug a pit at 3100' on a SW aspect. and found 3 prominent layers of facets, capped by a stiff wind slab. We also found two layers of buried surface hoar that were stubborn in the snowpit.

We dug a pit at 3100' on a SW aspect. There were large facets under a stout 3-4"  wind slab on the surface. We also identified 2 weak layers of buried surface hoar and several layers of facets in the middle of the snowpack. The first layer of facets about 25cm deep failed in both tests (CT11,CT14) but did not propagate in the extended column test (ECTN 22). The second layer of facets failed about 40 cm down on another layer of buried surface hoar (CT 16) but similarily did not progate in the extended column test ( ECTN27).
