Warspite

Hamburger Helper, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:33PM

Light dry snow made for good travel both up and down. 10 at bottom, 15-35 at TL exposure dependent. Snow didn't feel as deep as it was due to low density and firm crust beneath, worse on sunward aspects. Rode some SE and mostly NW, crust and buried refrozen sluff/rollerballs felt on both, riding still was pretty good on NW. Snow was sluffing fairly significantly in steep terrain. Alternative to the forecast the bonding was very poor. On the exposed ridgeline snow was slabbing and quite reactive where wind had hit it. Moderate winds at TL and strong above throughout the day, with snow transport at ridges and features. Some Clouds w/ on and off flurries hid most of the sun except for a couple short breaks (at least on west side of spray rd). Skied 8-3 and snowing when left so hopefully 5+ accumulation if it continues, should be a good day tomorrow. No avalanche activity observed that wasn't prior to Sunday afternoon. Dug NW at 2250, HS 210, no significant results but didn't have to go much below the crust to find a fairly faceted pack throughout (and a couple partially broken down crusts), something to give some thought once it warms up again and this upper crust starts breaking down.
