Green Mountain Glide Cracks

mtattersfield, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Short day out in Barriere on Jan 10th. 5cm HN over what appears to be a humidity crust - not present at ~1450m on approach road, starts around ~1550m, and increasing in thickness up to about 1.5mm thick at ~2100m where we turned around due to poor vis. Crust was noticeable, but not problematic for skiing. Dug a quick test profile in an opening in the forest, 1800m elevation, on small roll at 40 deg incline, HS ~210cm. CTM13 (SP), ECTP 12 down 40cm on decomposing stellars, 4F resistance above and below CTH27 (RP), ECTX down 70cm on rounding facets (1-2mm), 1F resistance above and below (maybe Xmas SH?) No other notable results in top 120cm. Also found an interesting looking glide crack (no release) in a large steep east facing glade (~40deg) known to have smooth ground cover, about 1850m elevation. Appears to have opened recently, about 2m deep with what appears to be around 30cm snow on the bed. Similar aspect and elevation to MIN report of a deep slab release in SunPeaks backcountry yesterday. Notably, observed 2x smaller glide slab releases in the same area (higher up and further north in same opening) in October 2020 when average HS was around ~100cm.
