Mt. Field

mr.j.douglas, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

-17 at the parking area and no real warming or sun hit us to help throughout the day. Snow depth ranged from knee deep off the road to nipple deep around tree line. One party of 3 ahead of us broke a great track through the slide alders and we passed them just before the head wall. At 2400m a soft slab started to develop and with each kick turn it started to get slightly thicker. At 2500m I released that soft slab in a small isolated pocket. Maybe 5cm thick, 10m-15m wide that ran for 15-20m. This was just below the steep roll that leads to the ridge and looking at the summit it was easy to see more wind transport. We all pulled the plug, including the other group of 4 behind us and enjoyed fantastic boot top blower into the trees. The decent through the slide alders was much better than anticipated and all 9 of us regrouped on the road. On the drive back to Canmore I noticed what looked like a small slide on instructors ridge off of Louise Ski Resort and another small event off the south slide path on Mt. Lipalian.
