Deep Fluffy Pillows

mhalik, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

On our sled ride in we saw a large size 2 avalanche that failed on a southeast facing treeline slope. It was too far away for a good phone photo unfortunately. I suspect it failed on the interface between the sun crust from last week and the storm snow that's loaded on since then. After parking the sleds we broke trail skinning up through 40cm of storm snow. We didnt notice much wind effect or slab-like properties in the snow until we reached treeline. We saw several recent (wihin last 48hrs) storm slabs that were around 10-20cm deep that had pulled out of an east facing headwall higher above us. The snow was more wind affected the higher we got so we stuck to lower elevation riding in the fluffier, less slabby storm snow. It was snowing hard at 2-3cm per hour when we left the area and sleeting at low elevations around 800m.
