Mount Seymour unstable conditions

b.c.koehler, Friday 12th January, 2024 6:40PM
Conditions were surprisingly touchy on sheltered north facing slopes. I did a few ECTs and shovel shear tests. Tests were sliding below the rain crust from a few days ago. Skiing was unable to penetrate through this layer into the weakness. Test site: North facing 1,000m 35 degree sheltered slope ECTP14 SP 30 cm down. ECTP17 SP 30 cm down. Shovel shear tests were mostly failing on isolation, or easily popping 30 cm down. All these were sudden planar, and failing below the rain crust on 2mm facets.
