very nice day - was warming with the sun
We went out to Brockton Point today to practice companion rescue and digging pits to check out the snowpack. Note that we are not experienced at this so take our results with a grain of salt: At 2pm on a NW facing aspect (315deg) we did an extended column test with no result and 4 column tests: 2 with no result, one with a fracture at 70cm after 4 taps from the shoulder, and one with a fracture at 48cm after 9 taps from the shoulder. At about 3pm we moved to a WSW facing aspect (250deg) and did two column tests: one with a shallow fracture after 5 taps from the shoulder (didn't measure depth, was near top of snowpack), and the other which showed a mini fracture line after 6 taps from the elbow, and fractured & slid after 4 taps from the shoulder (150cm). For this last one, one of our group decided to jump on it (without skis), and the November crust did fracture cleanly & slid under the load (170lb?) We dug down to the ground for all tests to see how the November crust reacted.
