March 30 POWDER!

southrockies, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:32PM

Today started out with our sled scratchers down on a melt-freeze crust to almost 1600m before we started to see some recent soft snow. We parked the sleds around 1800 m where there was 15 - 20 cm of new soft snow from the previous storm. AS we toured up the snow became a touch wind affected and you could tell there had been a lot of snow on the move recently but we had no obvious signs of instability (shooting cracks, whumpfing). Cornices are very large in this area and we did observe some overhanging pieces dropping off from the most recent growth that triggered a size 1.5 shallow wind slab. Temperatures remained cold -8.5 around noon at the ridge and winds from the SW kept it cool. It was a beautiful day in the mountains where it still feels like winter. We had no significant test results in our profile done on a northeast-facing slope. There were a few layers of different vintage wind slabs that may become more reactive with warming and sunshine in the forecast.
