Avalanche Information

Skier-triggered size 1 or 1.5 avalanche in the Motel 66 trees above Keith's Hut, in the Cerise Creek area off the Duffey Lake Highway. Avalanche was triggered accidentally from a convexity in a sparsely treed zone (a West aspect slope almost directly North of the hut), and created a partial skier burial (up to the waist) without any injuries. The bed layer underneath the slide was an icy crust. Crown depth was estimated to be 30-45 cm, slab width ~10m and run length ~50m. We also saw several natural avalanches of (at least) size two in alpine elevations on Vantage Ridge and Joffre. The Vantage avalanche appeared to have stepped down below the storm snow layer -- a striation was visible in the crown between two separate layers.
