Southern Wallowas SE of flagstaff butte

Today myself and Matt Lewis dug a test pit at 6027 feet on an East facing slope. It was approximately 20 degrees f very few clouds and very clamp wind. We observed no failure (ctn) with either a standard column test or extended column test (ectx). We were looking for weak layers at both the Jan 4 rain crust and the most rest storm crust. Our pit showed a mostly right-side-up snow pack today. We also observed no "red flag" warnings of unstable snow. The only exception was some wind-affected slopes at several open ridge tops. The Jan 4 crust appeared to be bonding very well in our test pit and the recent storm cycle crust also seems to be healing well. We observed some faceted rounded particles and found no buried surface hoar.
