Mostly cloudy to broken sky conditions with some sun breaks closer to midday. Very light snow flurries briefly occurred at trailhead in the mid morning. Winds were light.
Snowpack
I went to Rubicon Peak today to look at snow coverage and snowpack structure at higher elevations near the Sierra Crest. Minimal patchy snow exists below 7500' with more consistent snow coverage closer to 8000'. The snow at 8000' is around 3-4'' deep and mostly firm and supportable rain crust with some soft near surface facets on top. The snowpack is around 1.5 to 2 feet deep at the higher elevations. Above 8500' towards the top of the peak just over 9000', boot penetration becomes deep off of the firm boot packed trail. A snowpit in this area showed weak faceting snow with many of the previous rain crusts losing strength and also starting to break down and facet.
