Quick report
Went up Faye Luther canyon today on the south side of Jobs Peak, on the far eastern edge of the forecast zone. I wanted to check on the surface snow conditions ahead of the weekend storm. Like most other Carson Range areas, on shady slopes I found soft snow from the inside slider last weekend, resting atop near surface facets. The new snow in this area had settled to about 4-5", with the facets below, and then a very firm crust below all of that. This crust was a very slippery bed surface, which made skinning difficult, but also allowed me to kick off several small loose dry sluffs very easily on steep slopes. In fact, in some places, these released so easily that they almost behaved slab-like, with the pseudo-crown simply coming from the ski track. I also noted pretty extensive surface hoar formation on shady slopes, and on my exit in the late afternoon, this was still upright on many shady slopes, especially near creeks which were still open. I found a crust on E and SE slopes in the late afternoon after these had gone into the shade, but no evidence of natural pinwheeling or loose wet activity. I didn't feel much wind at all today.
