Elephants Hump

We walked up from Red Lake to the very base of high hump. Weather was clear, no wind, and warmed up very quickly as we ascended the ridge. There was notably 8 - 12 inches of new snow and the conditions looked great. Along the ridge on the walk up, we heard (and even slightly felt) a few very loud and notable whoomphs. Looking south towards stepper terrain, we did not see any obvious signs that avalanche activity had taken place (8200 feet). Around 8450 feet, we experienced a very loud whomph that made us stop and turn around. We traveled back to a flat part of the ridge and decided to head further up along the south side of Elephants Hump. After about 200 feet of travel we experienced another very notable whomph sound and we ended up deciding not to go all the way up the hump. We were able to look at the east face of Elephants back and saw no signs of avalanche activity in any part of the bowl. Although the snow packing was very loud today, we ended the day without seeing any evidence of avalanche activity through the terrain we traveled in and avalanche terrain we were able to see. Snow was dense and wind affected - overall beautiful day out there!
