Red Lake Peak

Even though new snow amounts only totaled one to two inches in the Carson Pass area, the new snow did help to create a smoother surface on some slopes on Red Lake Peak. The leeward aspects held the most new snow, with up to four inches in wind-loaded areas. The new snow rested on a one to three-inch thick refrozen crust. Below the crust, the snow remained wet and loose. Wind-scoured areas held rough, firm, and supportable crusts on the surface. Hand pits, ski cuts on wind-loaded slopes, and general observations revealed no significant signs of instability. Cloud cover and moderate winds kept things cooler today, but it warmed up quickly whenever the sun poked through the clouds. Some crusty areas even started to soften after just a few minutes in the sun.
