Gash

We found 6+ inches of dense new snow that fell in the last 24 hours at Gash. The new snow came in upside-down above the lower density snow from the last few days and created a small reactive storm slab problem. We observed a decent bit of cracking around our skis while traveling around. Some cracks propagated ~15 ft. Winds were generally quite light, with a moderate gust or two on the peak of Gash Point. We found some small pockets of wind drifted snow that produced shooting cracks right along the upper ridgeline. Below that, the snow was not wind affected. We dug a snowpit on a south aspect at 8000 ft. The total snow depth was 160 cm. We observed an unstable, propagating result that failed on the storm slab interface 15 cm deep (ECTP2). Below that, the snowpack was generally right side up with no particularly concerning layers. The slab of new and recent snow from the last week was around 90 cm thick. Below that, there were two thin crusts and some stiffer snow. The very bottom of the snowpack was slightly weaker and faceted, but still relatively strong. It rained up to around 6500 ft in the late afternoon. Snow surfaces got wet below that elevation and got moist up to 8000 ft in some areas. We observed some small rollerballs. We observed widespread cracking failing on the interface between today's denser new snow and yesterday's lower density snow. The cracks were generally just around our skis, but some propagated ~15ft.
