We spent the last 4 days at the State Line Yurt and found a shallow and weak snowpack with widespread signs of obvious instability but surprisingly no recent natural avalanches. We experienced impressively large whumps and collapsing in the snowpack on all aspects near treeline. We got propagated results with moderate force on the basal facets on both N and S facing aspects near treeline. The basal facets on N facing were 30cm thick and 0.3 to 0.5 mm in size with a 40cm 1F hard slab sitting above it with 30cm of recent storm snow at the top of the snow pack. The basal facets on S and scoured W facing slopes were 10 to 20 cm but were 0.5mm to 1 cm in size with striations and cupping also with a thin 1F hard slab sitting on top. HS was generally less than 50cm on S and E facing so probably not healing anytime soon. We gave N facing windloaded slopes a wide berth but didn't see any natural avalanches or obvious signs of instability We experienced minimal precipitation but the winds did pick up this morning with some active loading on N and E aspects.
