New wind slabs are becoming touchy this afternoon and forming on a wide variety of aspects. Active wind loading, and cracking under skis, was observed on all aspects W through S through E in a small area from 5,500’ to 6,000’ elevation in the Salmon River drainage near Timberline. Ridge top wind was from the west, but wind seemed to be funneling down the drainage and back up the opposite side. A great example of terrain influenced wind direction, and a reminder to look for wind loading on many aspects. These wind slabs, forming from today’s snowfall, were relatively small at up to 6” thick but actively growing larger.
