Quick report

Our AIARE 2 class toured up to the base of the cirque area, NE of the peak of Powderhouse. On Grass Lake itself, we saw effects of previous wind activity, but directions of the activity were mixed, with some activity from NW, some from NE, and some from E. At the base of the mountain, in protected areas, we found large surface hoar, about 5 mm in size. We dug a pit and found some layers in the snow -- softer layers with some crusts in the middle -- but did not find any instabilities. The bottom area of Powderhouse remains not filled in with snow; there are still plenty of obstacles, especially boulders and rocks.
