Quick report
While travelling today we did not see any natural signs of instability. We observed light rain up to 8000ft of elevation. Snow surface above 8000ft was sticky and warm all the way to the peaks, below 8000 feet the snow surface was wet. Heavy clouds and warm temps throughout the day. Attached is a snow pit dug on a N aspect from 1/26/24. As with most areas in the forecast region, facets in the lower half of the snowpack are continuing to show signs of instability. On 1/27/24, we dug a quick pit at 7400ft on a N facing slope. Snowpack depth was 110cm. As expected depth hoar at the base of the snowpack was substantial. Lower elevation N and NE facing slopes have much less snow above the depth hoar layer, triggering this layer seems more likely on lower elevation slopes with less loading. At higher elevation with a deeper snowpack, triggering this layer is becoming less likely, but if you do it will be a very large slab!
