Quick report
Started at 9 am, found 5" of fresh pow on a fragile freezing rain layer above the well-preserved 5" from a few days ago, all on a ski-supportive variably firm rain crust (depending on aspect and elevation, thickest under trees). Powder was unconsolidated at 9am but grew increasingly heavy with the sun and warming temps (31 degrees as per the pass weather stations but felt warm). By later morning, valley fog and blowing clouds started cooling things down a bit, but we still saw increasing numbers of pinwheels from treeshedding, and the new 5" began to slab up with the warmth. Enjoyed 10" of powder but headed out about 1 pm as it was getting heavy. Saw no slides but probably would have seen loose wet soon. Dug a pit at 4,700' on a SE slope and found what we expected - 15 cm new powder (4f) above a delicate freezing rain crust above 15 cm of fist hard snow, all on the classic Cascade cement. HS 150 cm. ECT-N5 20 cm down in the storm snow, relatively planar fracture. Overall a warm and beautiful day out!
