Morfee

Nice spring conditions in Morfee today. Started out cloudy and socked in but cleared off and by mid afternoon sun was shining and we were in hoodies. Snow is going fast, not a lot of avalanche sign from the last few warm days, however the ridges are starting to bare up fast and anything sun facing doesn’t have much snow left. Typically, the day started out with a hard crust, ‘hero snow’ and by mid afternoon was ‘mashed potatoes’, isothermal snow pack with no bottom on sun exposed slopes. Our pit was on the edge of a ridge in trees, 1500 m, South aspect. Very dense snow. There were several layers of concern, a sun crust at the surface, a layer down 10 cm and one down 70 cm both reacting in the hard to very hard range (CTM23 dn 10 RP x2, CTM26 dn 70 SP x2) Based on that and what we didn’t see of avalanches, confidence was high in the snow we had. We dug trenches everywhere on the ride out. So. Many. Trenches.
