Today held mostly cloudy skies with a fog layer on the upper half of the mountain. Temperatures ranged from 38°F at Bunny Flat to 31°F at 9,400 feet. Westerly winds were calm below treeline and light near and above treeline.
Snowpack
Today we continued our investigation of the weak layer interface between the December 18 and December 30th crusts on a S-SE aspect in Giddy Giddy Gulch at 9,400 feet. At this previously wind-loaded location, the height of snow is 205 cm. Unique to this data point, is that the 12/30 crust is 130 cm down from the surface and it was much thinner and weaker than we have found at other sites. This, combined with yesterday's information, provides additional evidence that this weak layer is in the early stages of integrating with the surrounding snowpack. Further assessment of this layer in areas with a shallower snowpack where it may be reactive to stability tests, the weight of a rider or additional loading will increase our understanding of its future reactivity.
