Quick report
Coverage is still early season in Tuckerman Ravine, but elevated winds over the previous night had loaded snow onto many slopes. We skinning up somewhat rocky/brushy terrain on the north side of the ravine and skied "Chicken Rock Gully". I felt comfortable skiing this gully with a partner because of the lower angle and previous skier traffic that had affected the snow.
Avalanche
While skinning into Tuckerman Ravine this morning (12/8/23), we heard about a skier triggered avalanche from descending skiers. After hearing more details and entering the ravine, there were two clear crown lines and debris fields on east aspects in the general "Center Headwall" area (just north of Chute Variation North), in middle to low elevations in the ravine. One avalanche was natural and most likely happened the previous night (12/7 into 12/8) during a period of elevated wind speeds and snow transport. The other avalanche was human triggered shortly after sunrise. The skier was caught, carried, and lost their skis/poles. They were fortunately not buried and were able to walk out. Based on photos, it looks like the underlying rocks and adjacent rock buttresses may have been a weak point in the snowpack.
