Test pit was dug on north facing slope at 6910 ft elevation. Conditions were wet with cloudy cover and light rain. Initially used 240 cm probe to test for hard layers, which were found at 65 and 75 cm. At 170 cm there was a very solid layer that required great force to push though and bury probe to 240 cm. Pit depth was 100cm. Single column compression test reacted at 17 elbow tap with settling at 35 cm, which is about the depth of new snow over the last 48 hours. Overall the entire snowpack was well adhered even with moderate compression settling. Shearing the column, by prying with the shovel, did reveal that the 65 or 75 cm layer did separate from newer snow. Skinning up revealed that the pit was dug approximately 20 yards below a snowmobile track, which gives us the impression of trustable stability. We skinned up to the top using the snowmobile track, moving directly above our pit and skiing down that same open tree area. Skiing and snowboarding was schloggy, making turns cautiously and purposefully in unridden snow.
