Magpie

24" depth at 3300'. The snowpack in the south facing Magpie chute was 30" of facets from top to bottom. The snowpack in the chutes is still thin, with many rocks exposed, and sluffs transporting all available snow, exposing the ground. Surface on the tour was a variable mix, with paper-thin surface crust, to facets, to 2-3" light powder on crusts. Access to Magpie is tough, with much alder bashing, and/or crossing icy creeks. No open water. Isolated cracking 1.5-3' radius around skis on hard wind slabs between 3300-4600'. Noticed a large-ish natural avalanche on a nearby west face of Goat Mountain at 4300'. A small-ish glide crack had slid at some point at 3000' on a nearby north face of 38 degrees. There was a natural avalanche on a east face of Magpie around 3000' that ran near to, but not over, the marked Magpie Glacier summer trail. No other reds flags. Temps around 0f.
