Quick report
Went to virgina lakes to tour looking for the last of cold snow. Found stout crusts on all aspects below 9500’. Above 9500’ NTL we started finding pockets of cold faceted snow ranging in depth from 5-20cm on true N aspects with slope angle greater than 20 degrees. At 9800’ we found N and NE aspects NTL-ATL to be filled with cold faceted snow 10-30cm deep. Skied well from 11000-9700’. Found old wind slabs that were non-reactive at around 10500’-10750’ on leeward cross loaded fingers. Temps were cold in the morning and quickly rising. There was no wind and skies were mostly clear with only high clouds increasing as the day went on 0/8-2/8. As we were leaving snow started to get moist at 9800’ and as we descended most of the crusts observed on ascent were starting to transition to corn around 12:00-1:00pm. NW, NE, and N aspects don’t seem to be in the true corn cycle yet 8500’-10000’. At 12:30, rollers balls and small cornice failures on E aspects at 9500’ were noted.
