Quick Observation

We headed out to the Elkford area today hoping it would snow enough through the day to find some good riding. As we started out this morning, it was just starting to snow. After the warmth the last few days, temperatures were much cooler today, and the snow was starting to refreeze. We saw evidence of previous wet loose avalanches from the recent warm temperatures and sun. On skis, we travelled to around 2300 m on a south-east slope, and found that the surface had refrozen into a crust that was supportive at higher elevations, but became less supportive down lower. When we left the area, it had snowed around 5cm, but unfortunately it wasn't quite enough to improve the ski conditions. It was still snowing when we left at the end of the day.
