Mostly clear blue skies and strong solar radiation combined with calm winds and at or above freezing temperatures for a beautiful day.
Snowpack
This morning we found ~1cm surface hoar everywhere as we made our way up the skintrack. Digging a pit on a NW aspect at 5200' revealed a right-side up snowpack that has settled nicely since last weekend creating a more supportive base. Interestingly, cornices have been trimmed back and we did not find significant wind loading on our route as high as 5600'. Solar aspects tell a slightly different story as there is a slight sun crust from the previous 2 days beneath a small amount of fresh/wind transported snow and the widespread surface hoar. A strong sun today affected solar aspects, breaking down the existing crust and creating new ones on slopes that received sun early in the day and shade later on. The afternoon warmth set off numerous rollerballs on many slopes and wet loose releases down to dirt on road cuts. Tree bombs were a concern today, as heavily loaded trees shed snow as the weather warmed throughout the day.
