Rubicon

We toured Rubicon from Highland Drive to about 8300 feet. Out of the parking lot, 2-3 inches of snow provided just enough snow to skin. From 6900 feet at the parking lot up to 7400 feet, coverage of rocks, bushes, logs, and stumps was non-existent to very shallow. At 7600 feet, HS increased to 6 inches. At 8100 feet, HS was about 18 inches with two half inch thick raincrusts at about 3 inches and 6 inches. Facets were between and below the raincrusts. Above 8 inches, there was nothing but 12 inches of unconsolidated facets. From 8300 to 7600 feet, the facets provided wonderful downhill skiing, except for the occasional rock strike. From 7600 to 7400 feet, the rock strikes became more frequent, and the snow moistened up. The truly sketchy skiing began from 7400 feet down; the photo shows how colorful the ground was at that point. We constantly hit either bushes and/or rocks. Below 7300 feet, we wondered often how close the cars were. In this last part, I hit at least one rock every 10 feet in distance. We were quite glad to be finished without major incidents. The skis are a bit scratched up.
