Quick report
Blue skies and calm winds made for a lovely first day of 2024. Toured from Glen Lake TH to the ridge above Hidden Lake. Most aspects held some form of crust. The ‘best’ snow was found in shady, wind sheltered terrain. Surface conditions varied from facets to surface hoar to breakable crust. We were surprised to find surface hoar at ridgelines to 8300’. Seems like any new snow will land on excellent facet/crust sliding surfaces. 30cm depth at 7300’. We dug one quick pit at 8300’ on an east aspect. Depth was 85cm. Crust facet combos existed throughout the snowpack with some striated depth hoar at the bottom 20cms. No propagation in our ECT and the entire block came off the pit wall when pulled. Road conditions: An expertly driven Prius could make the summer trailhead, we were able to ski to/from the car.
