Quick report
Wet precip from yesterday evening onward. Yesterday's fine skiing became heavy as-expected today, with a unique freezing-rain crust atop. Frangible, slippery, and perhaps the thickest zipper-crust I've skied. Probably a better day for a snowboard off-piste, though almost everyone at the resort stuck to the groomers. Precip slacked off at 10am, as predicted, but restarted as regular rain until at least early afternoon, when we packed it in. At the pass proper, the ice-accumulation was impressive and crystal-clear on windward surfaces. With the continued rain, the trees resounded with the sound of falling chandeliers as they shed the ice. Off-piste skiing was poor at the sub-4k elevations traveled. Soggy creeks continue their struggle against the snowpack. Cloud cover was nearly constant, with a cloud deck 4k or lower much of the day. One surprising bit of blue poked through in late morning. Late-afternoon rosy light is getting through a bit, too.
Avalanche
See photos -- plenty of visual evidence of slides on the upper west slopes of Kendall Peak. Possible small natural slides in the Coal Creek drainage, too. Visibility was super limited, there ought to be many more out there.
