Skied around Mt Assiniboine based out of the Naiset huts from Feb 18th to 22nd. Beautiful powder skiing for the duration of our stay with nobody else in the area.
On Wednesday the 18th we left the Sunshine Village boundary before sunrise in chilly -20 temps headed to Assiniboine via Citadel pass. We broke trail the entirety of the way with ~30cm of ski pen. We noted plenty of whumpfs and settlements propogating up to 20m from the Jan 24 surface hoar down 35cm on sheltered slopes at treeline, and open non-solar slopes BTL below Citadel pass. Minimal cracking however and we weren't able to get anything to move on small test slopes, suspect new fist snow has not yet settled into cohesive slabs with enough energy to move on these aspects yet.
On the 19th we skied E/NE aspects at treeline off the Nublet finding great deep powder conditions. In the afternoon winds picked up to moderate from the SW transporting snow at ridgetop, around 1400 we watched thin size 1.5 windslab release below the corniceline from the ridge of Nublet
On the 20th we lapped the windward Westerly alpine slopes of Mt Cautley. 30cm of fist pow on top of old crusts made for excellent skiing in the sun. Noted old debris from two size 2 WSL West of Wonder pass, and more whumpfing/settlements at treeline.
On the 21st skied North facing moraines below Terrapin with 30-50cm of slow cold pow on the shaded slopes. Noted a new Sz 2 WSL on SE crossloaded alpine slopes of Mt Og.
Skied out Mt Shark on the 22nd, no obs besides loose dry debris off the NE slopes of Mt Cautley because we were too busy sloggin'.
