Teaching a CAA Level 1 industry course this week, we have dug numerous snow profiles in the HBM and Hankin areas. Most areas tested, we found hard to no results on the Dec 6 crust/sugar snow(facets) down average 75-100cm in sheltered locations. Of note, today we targeted specifically shallow snow depth areas, and found this layer much easier to trigger with various shear tests. Although this layer appears to be inactive, it shows the potential of triggering in a shallow area, and having a resulting avalanche pull out in that layer where the snowpack is much deeper and consequential. And we were able to easily trigger fresh windslabs today with new snow being loaded onto Westerly aspects.
