Zeerip your skins off and ski like it’s April powder

AvCan Northwest, Friday 20th January, 2023 7:20PM

Today we skied at Anderson and found 65 cm of total storm snow from the previous few days. At ridgecrest at treeline there were moderate southerly winds transporting snow and building new wind slabs. We saw no new avalanches, but we stuck to low angle terrain in the trees, and avoided steep slopes and wind-loaded areas. The skiing was heavy but good down to 900 m where we found the snow/rain line. We dug on a north facing slope at 1100 m and found that the 65 cm of new snow would fail with moderate taps in a Compression Test (CTM14 RP) but not propagate during an Extended Column Test (ECTN28 down 65cm). We also found a layer made up of facets and surface hoar. This layer is 80 cm deep and also produced results on Compression Tests but did not propagate during an Extended Column Test (CTH23 RP, ECTN28). It was overcast and snowing lightly, with trace amounts of accumulations, all day.
