Avalanche conditions are changing quickly in the Pine Pass. The warm temperatures have settled the recent snow and helped bond the touchy windslabs from last weekend. We dug down at treeline and found a warm and well consolidated snowpack 225 cm deep. There is a thin crust down 1-2 cm that is limiting the snow being blown by southwest winds. This crust could also provide a bed surface for the incoming storm snow (check the forecast for details!). It was the whiteout conditions more than the avalanche hazard that kept us riding small features and playing in the trees today. The new snow is covering objects and filling creeks but there are still holes to watch out for!
