Beware of cornices!

Yukon Field Team , Tuesday 12th April, 2022 3:35PM

Most noteable observation today was a very recent natural avalanche triggered by a cornice failure. We observed the avalanche debris on a steep East aspect in a hanging valley above Bryant Lake. Size 3 avalanche with (smart)car size chunks of debris. Ran from a ridge at 1700m full path to 1400m elevation, 25-40m wide. A clear reminder to give cornices a wide berth right now. Oh, snow quality for riding - its "ok", snow is wind-affected, but not terrible riding.

Snow conditions were: Wind affected. Weather conditions were: Cold, Sunny, Windy. We rode: Alpine slopes. We avoided: Convex slopes. Riding quality was ok.

Avalache Conditions: Slab avalanches today or yesterday. 30cm + of new snow, or significant drifitng, or rain in the last 48 hours.
