Cold winter morning, very thin snow pack down low, decent snow pack up high for the 1st of the year. I dug on a NE slope 32 degrees, HS 120, my ECT did not fail. I shovel sheered my ECT column and the entire column failed on the ground. My CT failed near the ground on the warm November snow (the rain layer in the Wasatch). The break was not clean. The Smith and Morehouse area definitely needs quite a bit more snow. If not paying attention I could have easily messed my sled up on rocks. My skis got plenty of hits down low however great powder skiing up high...even on east faces. The only notable sun crust was on the south flank of the ridgeline below the summit.
