Iago North Bowl

andrew.moldovan1991, Sunday 12th February, 2023 10:30PM

Slightly variable day at Iago today. In the morning the snow was light and dry, with about 30cm of ski penetration (maybe even less) which gave us some very nice quick turns on the first lap into the North Iago bowl. By the afternoon the snow had turned wet and heavy (even though it was cold and snowing), so we cut short and built some jumps. Dug a pit at the entrance to the north bowl around 1700m facing N in a pretty sheltered area. The most recent storm snow was about 30cm down and there was a very clear interface between that and the layer below. In the column test, this popped after 5 wrist taps and I could pull the whole slab away (top layers were very consolidated). 80cm down was the first crust and this broke after 18 whacks (8 from elbow) and again pulled the whole column/slab away. The second crust was at 120cm and I could not get that to go. Did an extended column test, but there was no repeat of the failure on the 80cm crust and no propagation on the most recent storm snow interface.
