Free Ice Cream at Ravens

FacetHound, Friday 2nd February, 2024 8:10PM
Rain rain has yet to fully go away, but above ~1550m it turned to snow! We poked our noses up the Asulkan trail despite sustained liquid sunshine from the trailhead. Conditions treeline and below are to be expected: 20-30cm of rain soaked ice cream snow remains reactive in various hand shear tests with evidence of small loose-wet avalanches and tree bomb debris almost everywhere the eye could see on a flat light and foggy day. A few photos of notable slides. Despite evidence of a lot of activity below treeline, no evidence of larger slab avalanches were observed on Ravens or nearby slopes at higher elevations (though visibility was impeded significantly by snow and fog). A test pit produced inconsistent results (see Snowpack Obs), but indicated that instability still very much exists despite falling temperatures. Surface accumulation was ~1cm of somewhat dry (in comparison) snow by about 12:30pm. Travel conditions were difficult today, skin wax is advised. I suspect as FL continues to drop avy and tree bomb debris will freeze and be cause for significant hazard until enough precip falls to cover them. Be careful out there!
