White Pass observations

Jasmin Dobson, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Field observations as reported from Alastair Wain (AvCan/YAA Field Technician) on March 14th. Weather observations Carcross 09:56 Scattered cloud, no precip, 1.5c, winds right from SW Conrad 10:22 Overcast, no precip, 2.2c, winds calm Log Cabin 10:59 Overcast, raining (V) 2.2c winds calm Fraser 12:00 Overcast, raining (l) 3.5c winds calm Highway obs. At log cabin, deteriorating alpine visibility with dropping ceiling. I observed multiple size 1 -2 Natural avalanches (pic attached) on SE and NE aspects, but not wide spread. As visibility was limited I was not able to observe all the terrain at Log Cabin. Light precip (rain) started between Log cabin and Fraser. Along the highway, the solar effect and warming temps were evident in snowballing, rock fall and snow melt. Snowpack The depth of the snowpack just above the Fraser customs is approximately 125cm with boot pen at ~35cm. Snow profile attached and photos of the snow layers are attached. My concerns are the rapid warming and rain / moisture entering the upper snowpack. There was a noticeable difference in the weight of the snow in the upper layers (1f / 4f / F) of the snowpack when compared to the lower layers. The ice crusts and facets in the mid / lower snowpack are now buried under a moist upper snowpack. If the temps drop low enough tonight we may see an ice crust from today's rain on the top of the snow surface.
